SAPTX Substance Abuse Evaluations

DOT SAP pricing · Texas

How much does a DOT SAP evaluation cost in Texas?

Short answer

DOT doesn't set what a SAP charges, so prices vary. SAPTX charges one flat fee of $420 for the full DOT return-to-duty process: the initial evaluation, written recommendation and referral, case management, follow-up evaluation, follow-up testing plan, and documentation to your employer and the Clearinghouse. Education or treatment programs and the drug tests are separate costs.

Who decides what a SAP charges

Nobody at DOT does. The rules don't require an employer to provide SAP services or any recommended education or treatment, and they leave payment to employers and employees. Who pays can depend on a union or management agreement, or on health benefits. Ask your employer or union before you pay anything yourself. The one thing an employer can't charge you for is the list of SAPs it must give you.

What the $420 covers

It's one flat fee for everything Clayton does, start to finish.

What isn't included

What to ask any SAP before you pay

  1. Are you licensed in the state where I live? Look it up on the state board.
  2. Can I talk to a real person before I pay anything?
  3. What's the full price, and what does it include? Does it cover the follow-up evaluation and the paperwork to my employer and the Clearinghouse?
  4. Are you DOT-qualified, and registered in the Clearinghouse if I hold a CDL?
  5. Will you promise a finish date before you've evaluated me? If so, walk away.

Common questions

Does my employer have to pay for my SAP evaluation?

Not under DOT's rules. Part 40 doesn't require employers to provide SAP services or treatment, and it leaves payment to employers and employees. A union contract, company policy or health plan may change that, so ask.

Is $420 per visit or for everything?

$420 is one flat fee for everything Clayton does, start to finish, from the first evaluation through the follow-up evaluation and the paperwork.

Why do SAP prices vary?

DOT doesn't regulate what SAPs charge, so each SAP sets their own fees and decides what's included. That's why you should ask for the full price, and what it covers, before you book.
